Nellie Manning nee JOHNSON
NATIVE OF DINGLE, COUNTY KERRY, IRELAND.

Her parents are Patrick Johnson and Johanna O'Sullivan, also of County Kerry. Nellie Johnson married in June of 1898 in San Francisco, CA; Thomas M. Manning also a NATIVE OF DINGLE, COUNTY KERRY, IRELAND; as were his parent's Michael & Nellie O'Mainin. Thomas was the first of his Family to immigrate to America and was a successful Gold Miner. Owning several mines in Montana & Alaska. He used his success to bring many Family & Friends from Ireland to the New World; who then worked the Mines together helping the Clan in America & Back in Ireland to Grow, Thrive and Prosper during difficult days as a Nation, as a People, i.e. the lead up to the Irish Civil War, INDEPENDENCE; and the ensuing IRISH FREE STATE, the later split with Northern Ireland and the Creation of The REPUBLIC of IRELAND that we know Today.

Many Irish Folk came to America and were able to bring other's to America because of this Clan of Irish Miners that Thomas & Nellie Manning helped to Create here in America. They dreamed of retiring back in County Kerry & Opening a Pub. This was not meant to be. Thomas died in 1907 in Nome, Alaska in a mine cave in at the age of 38... leaving Nellie Manning and their only child; Mary Helena Manning, age eight behind. Nellie later operated a successful Boarding House in Seattle, King County, Washington. Nellie was a Daughter; a Sister; A Wife; A Mother; An Aunt; Grandmother and so on. Nellie's Daughter Mary Helena Manning married John Joseph Wynne II. The couple had one child.

Nellie & Thomas; their daughter Mary Helena & her husband, John Joseph Wynne II, his parents John Joseph Wynne & Mary Ann Gardner; along with many other members of the Family are Buried here at Holy Cross. Both Mary Helena Manning's & John Joseph Wynne II's Fathers were buried at Holy Cross in 1908. Less than 21 years after the first internment at Holy Cross.

"The first interment, that of Timothy Buckley, was on June 7th, 1887. Since then, many legendary Californians of different eras have proudly selected Holy Cross as their final resting place. These well known people include: San Francisco Mayor and state Senator during the period of the famous earthquake James Phelan; California Governor Edmund "Pat" Brown; Founder of the San Francisco Chronicle, Michael Henry de Young; baseball legend Joe DiMaggio; the assassinated (1978) San Francisco Mayor George Moscone; Bank of America Founder A.P. Giannini; famed sculptor Benny Bufano and many others."
