Birth: Jan. 14, 1859
Death: Jan. 9, 1935

Just as the day was slipping into evening, the gentle life of one of the Goldsmith community's best loved women passed out. Mrs. Laura Ellen Barr, died of a cerebral
hemorrhage. Mrs. Barr was found on the floor of her home by
Miss Louise Clark of the Normanda community who came to the
home about 5 o'clock Wednesday evening. Summoning neighbors
the stricken woman was placed on the bed and a doctor
summoned but she died at 5:30 without regaining consciousness. Laura Ellen Barr, eldest child of John A. and Maria (Higgins) Newlon was born January 14, 1859 and her entire life was spent in and near the Hopewell community, where for many years she was one of the faithful and active members of the Hopewell church. Her passing from this community is a loss which cannot be restored. Of a quiet and gentle disposition, a mother and
grandmother, loved by all she leaves a host of friends to mourn her going. At the home Mrs. Barr had been doing some sewing and the prostrate form was found on the floor beside the machine, as if she had arisen and started to walk away when she was stricken. When a child, Mrs. Barr's mother died and on her went the responsibility of the household in which there were two younger sisters, a brother and an aged grandfather. January 5, 1883 she was united in marriage to Ransom Barr, whose death occurred April 24, 1931. They spent their almost half century of married life on a farm north of Goldsmith where they reared a family of splendid children. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Barr removed to Goldsmith. The surviving children are Lonzo L. Barr, residing on the home farm; Prof. Paul E. Barr, of Grand Forks, N.D.; Mrs. Omer Phares, of goldsmith; Mrs. Emil Rayls, of Kokomo and Mrs. Paul West, of Prairie township. She is also survived by a brother, Albert Newlon, of the Hopewell community and 13 grandchildren.
