Esther Anne Smith Cain was born 1814 in Troy, Miami county, Ohio to parents Amos Smith (1779-1852) and Elizabeth Minerva Ashby (1780-1962. She had 13 siblings with 3 babies either stillborn or dying shortly after birth. Amos' wife, Elizabeth, was the daughter of Bladen Ashby and his wife Catherine Van Meter. She married Ambrose Cain age the age of 18 on December 26, 1832 In Darke County, Ohio. To their union, they had five children: Amy Cain (1833-1899), Mary Cain (1835-1915), Eleanor Ellen Cain (1837-1909), Elizabeth Cain (1838-1876), and Kisiah Cain Wolf (1840-1926).
She was last seen in June 1880 on the Federal Census in Wildcat, Tipton, Indiana at the age of 66, widowed and living with her youngest daughter Kisiah Cain Wolf and family. Therefore, she died after 1880 probably in Tipton County, Indiana.
