GALIEN - Rex Hinman, 88, a longtime resident of Galien, MI, died at 8:53 AM Tuesday morning, July 15, 2008, in Hamilton Communities, New Carlisle, IN, after a battle with Lewy Body Disease. Rex was born February 17, 1920, in Buchanan, Michigan, to Lee and Lydia (Fulton) Hinman, and graduated from Galien High School in 1937. He served his country as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. Rex married Jean Renbarger on March 12, 1949, in Galien. He coached little league for many years in Galien and was instrumental in getting the league started there. He was employed by Niles Excavating and, after retiring from Selge Construction Company, Rex worked for Wightman and Associates. He was a devoted husband, dad and grandfather who loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed his ponies and riding in many area parades. Rex was a lifetime member of Galien American Legion Post 344. He served on the Galien Village Council for many years and was a member of the Galien Woods Historical Society. Survivors include his wife, Jean; a son, Don (Joni) Hinman of Clinton, MI; daughter, Laurie Linville of Granger; grandchildren, Chris, Corey, Amy, Ross Hinman and Sara Mead; great-grandchildren, Cameron and Bradyn; a sister, Helen Chapman of Three Oaks; a brother, Beryl (Myra) Hinman of Three Oaks; and his daughter-in-law, Bonnie Hinman of Buchanan. Rex was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Hinman; brothers, Glen, Dean and Raymond; and a sister, Meryl Boltenhouse. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 18, in the Community of Christ Church in Galien, with Reverend Bill Blake officiating. Interment will follow at Galien Cemetery, with military honors presented by Roy Chilson American Legion Post #344, Galien. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday in Pobocik Funeral Home, Three Oaks. Memorials may be made to the Galien Community of Christ Church or to Galien American Legion Post 344.
