An Old Soldier At Rest: William D S Gardner, who died on Sunday, June 5th, at the home of his son, Leslie O, at Athens, Wis, was brought here the next day by funeral coach, and the funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the M E Church, conducted by the Rev E J J Jeffrey. Burial with military honors in Garden Bluff Cemetery, West Point, beside Mr Gardner's wife who passed away Dec 31, 1918. Leslie Gardner, who is principal of schools at Athens, was accompanied here on Monday by his wife, son, Laurence, and daughter Jean.
Mr Gardner's death was due to the infirmities of age. He had been confined to bed for the past 10 months and was given devoted care by the son's family.
Mr Gardner was born in Stephentown, NY, Oct 13, 1839, to John and Elizabeth Gardner. In 1854 he came to this community with his parents and here he lived ever since with the exception of the past six or seven years during which time he made his home with the son and family. He was a lifelong farmer, but retired quite a good many years ago and moved to this village.
He was married to Julia A Martin in 1864. They had seven sons and one daughter. The surviving children are Allen, Langenberg, Canada; Harry, Portland, Ore; Frank, Milwaukee; and Leslie, Athens. Frank is the only one, besides Leslie, able to be present at the funeral. He is accompanied by his wife and son, Floyd. Other relativeshere for the funeral were: a granddaughter and her husband, Mr and Mrs N A Campbell, Madison; a grandson, Harold Gardner, and his family, St Paul; and Mrs Lilly Gardner, Reedsburg.
Mr Gardner was an old soldier, having enlisted in Co C, 43 regiment Wisconsin Volunteers. In this connection it is interesting to note that "Wisconsin Volunteers," a volume on file at the public library gives the names of 75 Gardners who enlisted from Wisconsin, 11 of whom were named William.
