Franz was baptized with the surname Macke because at the time it was his father's surname. At a later point, his mother inherited the Kleine-Brörmann land at which point his father and their children also changed their surname to Brörmann (Broermann) - this was the custom in Germany that the family name followed the name of the land (the Kleine-Brörmann farm).
