Dr. Joseph Benjamin McCarson Jr., 79, of Hull, died Thursday, February 23, 2006, following a sudden illness. He was born on November 20, 1926, in Henderson County, N.C. and was the son of the late Joseph Benjamin McCarson Sr. and Ellen Corn McCarson.
He was a tent evangelist and attended the Abundant Life Fellowship Church in Arcade. He was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, was vice-president of the Calvary Baptist Institute in Pasadena, Texas, and was a missionary to Meridia, Mexico, where he helped build schools and churches. Dr. McCarson was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Ann Garrett McCarson, daughters, Mavis Kerley, Sneedville, Tenn., and Martha Tittle, Danielsville; step-daughter, Debbie Garner, Chestnut Mountain; sons, the Rev. Malcolm McCarson, Asheville, N.C., and Marvin McCarson, Brick, N.J.; a brother, the Rev. Carl McCarson, Hendersonville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 25, in the Abundant Life Fellowship Church with the Revs. James McDonald and Malcolm McCarson officiating.
Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery in Gainesville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mexico Mission Fund, c/o Cornerstone Christian Center, P.O. Box 5346, Asheville, NC 28813.
