At home with her loving family in El Alto, Flora Garcia Romero, age 94, met our Lord on August 8, 2012.
Flora Leonides Garcia was born on July 30, 1918 in Ledoux, New Mexico, Mora County to the union of Perpetua Vigil and Alfonso García.
After her mother passed away, Flora at the age of 12 together with her older sister, Gertrude helped raise her younger siblings.
Flora met and married her lifelong love, Nicomedez Romero on May 23, 1942 during the start of World War II. Nico enlisted in the United States Army three months later and along with four other brothers served overseas together. In the intervening years Flora saw her husband only once while raising her oldest child, Nicomedez Geraldo in the community of EI Alto until he returned 2 1/2 years later. Flora was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years on July 3, 1998, parents, mother and father-in-laws, Rita and Milnor Romero, sisters, Gertrude Esquíbel (Martín) and María Padilla (Tony), son-in-law and grandson, Ed and Steven Journey and a very special daughter-in-law, Avelina Branch Romero in May 1967 after which Flora along with Nico assumed the parenting of her grandchildren, Carla, Jerome and Geraldine, whom they adopted. Also preceded in death by her sisters-in-law, Martha, Nea, Cecilia, Nora, Valentina and Lucretia and brothers-in-law, Guadalupe, Roberto, Milnor, Esequíel and Ernesto.
Flora is survived by five daughters, Jeana Journey of Rio Rancho, Frances Romero and Carla Martínez (Leslie) of Albuquerque, Angela Romero (Frank) of Mora and Geraldine Coleman (Joseph) of Arvada, CO and four sons, Nicomedez (Jerry) Romero (Donna),John T. Romero (Elizabeth) and Alfonso Romero all of Mora and Jerome Romero(Gaynor) of Australia. Also surviving are two sisters, Bercy Espiñoza (Dan) of Mora and Sophia Ball and of Cheyenne, WY, two brothers, Domingo García (Della) of Denver, CO and Ernest Paul García (Ann) of Albuquerque. Also surviving her are 17 grandchildren, Carla, Jerome, Geraldine, Flora Gale, Ricky, Joseph, Joan, Andrea, Cecilia, Amanda, John Jr., ,Natalie, Nicole, Harry Jr., Amos Nick, Kathleen and Nicholas, 34 great-grandchildren, Joey, Brittany, Mark Jr., Derrick, Ricky, Ryan, Madeline, Morgan, Taylor, Asa, Asher, Jadyn, Matthew, Candace, Bryan, Katie, Isaiah, Chrissy, Hailey, Noah, Jordyn, Jaylan, Lauryn, Brooke, Danisha, Randy, Abrianna, Isaac, Jacob, Jovone, Kaitlyn, Jeremiah, Jasmine and Abram, two great-great-grandchildren, Cayden and Taylah, two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Romero and Amelia Romero and three brothers-in-law Guillermo Romero, Luís Romero and George Martínez.
A lifelong parishioner of Santa Gertrudis Catholic Parish, Flora always strived to have her children and grandchildren be faithful to God. Flora was loved by many as she never had a bad thing to say about anyone. We especially feel blessed for the great dedication given to mom by granddaughter/daughter, Carla Martínez during the past 3 1/2 months.
Rosary Devotional Services will be conducted at Santa Gertrudis Catholic Church in Mora, NM at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 10, 2012. Rosary will prayed by the Hermanos De Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno. Devotional Mass will also be at Santa Gertrudis at 10:00 a.m. on August 11, 2012. Interment will follow at Ave María Family Plot in El Alto, NM. Pallbearers will be John T. Romero Jr., Amos Nick Romero, Nicholas Luna, Harry Romero Jr., Joseph Romero and Kathleen Romero. Honorary Pallbearers will be all her grandchildren.
