Long-time Bartlesville resident, Luella Todd Bailey, proud homemaker, Redeemer Lutheran Church member and friend, passed away on May 18, 2013, at the AMG Nursing Center in Edmond, OK at the age of 93.
Luella was born March 30, 1920, in Cherryvale, KS to Lucille Rambow Todd and Thomas Frederick Todd. Growing up in her beloved Kansas, she excelled in math studying in the Cherryvale schools. While helping with family duties, she attended the Wichita Comptometer School in Wichita, KS and after graduation, worked for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) using the key-driven mechanical calculator.
Upon moving to Bartlesville, Luella married Delmar Delton Bailey, a long-time employee of the National Zink Company, on May 27, 1951, and raised her only child, Larry Eugene Bailey. She also worked for Phillips Petroleum Company in the 1960s.
With her religion as a basis for her life, Luella was very active at Redeemer Lutheran Church as a Sunday and Bible School teacher and she loved the music and faithfully poured Communion for many years. She also was an avid Cub Scout leader for her son's troop.
Luella was a long-time member of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) and won their annual exercise award—the Street Walker—several times, once walking 67 miles in 3 months. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Guild and set up many dinners for their meetings. Among friends and family, she was known for her homemaking skills and her baking especially her delicious hot rolls which she shared with all. She also loved her cats throughout the years.
Luella is survived by her daughter-in-law, Paula Bailey of Edmond, OK and her sister, Anna Belle Todd Ruckle of Wichita, KS. She will be sorely missed by many other relatives and friends especially members of her church who supported her with cards and calls during her illness. The family would like to share their deep appreciation for all the care and attention that Luella received from her special friends: Mary Zargus, Wilmer Wagoner, Pat Bowersock, Monty and Jean Cunningham, and John and Corrine Hambrick of Bartlesville, plus Steve, Lou and Jennifer Hawks of Edmond, OK.
Luella was predeceased by her husband, Delmar, who passed away on July 4, 1973, in Bartlesville and her beloved son, Larry, who passed away on March 17, 2005, in Edmond, OK. Besides losing her mother in childbirth in 1925 when Luella was 5, she lost her father in 1962 and her brother, Clarence R. Todd, on June 29, 2009, in Pueblo, CO. She is also predeceased by her half-sisters: Mildred Money Grandstaff in Bartlesville in 2002, and Pauline Opal Money Roberts in Claude, TX in 1995.
A memorial fund has been established and those who wish may send their contributions to the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3700 S.E. Woodland Road, Bartlesville, Oklahoma 74006.
