Black Hawk, (Sauk Leader)
His Indian Name was: Makataimeshekiakiak. born in the village of Saukenuk on the Rock River, Rock Island, Illinois, in 1767 was a leader and warrior of the Sauk American Indian tribe.
He had 2 sons: Nashashuk and Gamesett
He fought in the War of 1812 and The Black Hawk War where many lives were lost.
Black Hawk was buried on the farm of his friend, after a brief illness, in Davis County.
In 1839, his remains were stolen then were retrieved by the Burlington Historical Society whose building burned down in 1855 destroying the remains.
There is a memorial marker for him in the Iowaville Cemetery although doubtful any of his remains are there.
