Abilene, Texas -- Ginger Thornton, 64, of Abilene, TX passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2007. She will be greatly missed.

Ginger was born on September 22, 1943 to Gene and Melba Thornton in Abilene, TX. She attended Abilene High School and graduated from McMurry University with a bachelor's degree in secondary education. She taught most of her career in AISD as a special education teacher. Before her career as a teacher, she worked as a Vice President for Thornton's Department Store, her family owned business. Thornton's was a mega department store in Abilene from 1937 to 1985. Most people remember Thornton's for their Christmas window display.

Services will be held Friday, December 28, at 3 pm at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 Hwy 277 South, followed by a graveside in Elmwood Memorial Park with Pastor Mike Jones officiating. The family received friends Thursday evening at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home on Hwy 277.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Melba Thornton.

She is survived by one son, Matthew Scroggs and wife, Mia, of Austin, TX; one daughter, Melissa Smith and Greg Collins of Abilene, TX; six grandchildren, Courtney Nichols and husband John, Kristin Staples, Ryan Staples, Katie Scroggs, Annie Scroggs and Ethan Scroggs; and one great-grandson, Carter Castenada.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Rescue the Animals, 5933 South 1st, Abilene, TX, 79605.
