"May 1950.
This basket was given to my mother when she was six years old by her sister Mary Wirt, who brought it from Kentucky. This would make the basket well over 100 years old, maybe 115 or 120 - or 130 years old. Mary was Mother's oldest sister--See family record.

[p. 1]
"Sept. 30, 1863
Dear Mother,
We received your letter yesterday and we were glad to hear that you arrived safely at Sabina without any difficulty or accident.
I suppose you have been gone about long enough to want to take a peep in the kitchen to see how we are doing up things. I get up every morning at day light and work from that til night and get along with every thing tolerably well except poreing [sic - pouring] out the coffee you know & was always awkward at that. I have something else to tell you last Saturday just after dinner there was a carriage drove up to the door and who should it be
[p. 2]
cousin Arm. Wirt from Kentucky I don't believe & was ever so much surprised in my life but she is a dear sweet cousin and I do really love her. She intends to stay until next week and then go to Bloomington where she will perhaps remain this winter and teach music.
We intended going out to John's today but just as we got ready Mrs. Esthmell from Ben. Town C[O] and Em. Crum came and we were disappointed.
Gussy & Florence are still going to school. They keep Bettie bothered all the time & think you will be in Gussy debt pretty deep til you return that is if she continues to teach more than the one month.
Rush is still herding the cattle from the farm and digs potatoes between whiles.
Henry is still working for us.
[p. 3]
I don't fee[l] in a writing humor to night for I forgot it until we were just going to bed when I mentioned something about writing and cousin Ann would not let] me to til I wrote you a few lines so I am doing it in double-quick and har[d]ly tak[ing] time to think. But I will write you again and give you a more minute description of the home affairs. Give my love to Grandmother and to my unkle [sic] and aunts and cousins and tell them I would like to see them especially grandmother. Don't make yourself uneasy about home but try and enjoy your visit and write soon and often to your affectionate daughter Kate.
[p. 4]
Florence wanted to write some in this but she is fast asleep and perhaps in the morning she will not have time as the boys are going to start to town pretty early
excuse mistakes good night.
don't let anyone see this."

January 7, 1870

My dear cousin Kate.
I have not heard from any of my relatives in Illinois for more than a year, although several of them owe me letters, so I thought I would write to you and if yor did not answer my letter yourself, probably you could get Wilson to do so. It has been so long since I have heard from any of you, that I do not know what changes may have taken place. I often think of you all and wonder how you are getting along and what you
[p. 2]
are doing.
We have had a very pleasant winter here so far, and it has been quite lively, plenty of amusements of all kinds. It has been somewhat dull for a few days as Congress has not been in session, but as it meets again next week, I suppose the city will be full of strangers and politicians.
I have not been in Portsmouth since I was out with you last fall a year, but hear from there occasionally and they are all getting along finely.
I had some pictures taken not long ago and will send you the only one I have left. It is a profile picture and is considered good for that kind, but I do not like them as well
[p. 3]
as a full face.
If you answer this letter please give me all the news for the past year that will prove interesting to me.
I wrote to Ellen and Gussy a long time ago but as they have not answered my letters I suppose they do not care about corresponding with me. If any of the family will write I will promise to answer their letters promptly.
Give my love to all my relatives as they are too numerous to mention by name and remember me to all inquiring friends.
Address your letter as this one is headed. With best wishes for Wilson, yourself and family. I remain your affectionate cousin
Wm. H. Newman."

"[p. 1]
Treasury Department
Solicitor's Office
Washington D.C.
October 22, 1870.

My dear cousin Kate.
Your very welcome letter arrived during my absence from the City, and since my return I have been so busy that I have had very little time for letter writing. I was very glad to see that you had not all forgotten me, and would like very much to hear from some of you often.
I was very sorry to hear of your affliction and hope that your eyes are entirely well by this time.
Nothing would please me better than to make you a visit, as I know
[p. 2]
I should enjoy myself, and think it would do me good. I intend to go to Portsmouth next summer and if I have an opportunity will come out to Illinois for a week or so. I have enjoyed excellent health this summer and fall, and never felt better in my life than I have lately.
It begins to make me feel old to hear of my younger relatives having families growing up around them, but I suppose I was cut out for an old bachelor, so I will have to grin and bear it. Well, I suppose I might do worse than living in a state of single blessedness, at any rate I will try and think so, and that will be some consolation.
I like Washington very much and as I am getting a very good salary and only have to work
[p. 3]
six hours a day and not very hard at that. I guess I will remain here by some little time yet. I suppose you Western people have an idea that the Capital will be moved West before long, and although I do not agree with you in that belief, I would not be bored at all, as I would be nearer home, and besides I believe I like the West better than any other part of the Country, and I have tried living in all parts.
As I must go to work. I will have to close this uninteresting letter.
Give me love to all the family and to every one of my relatives as they are too numerous to mention in detail. If any one of them will take the time and trouble to write to me, I will promise to answer immediately.
I hope you will have some pictures
[p. 4]
of the children taken before long, as I should like very much to have some.
Hoping that you will not delay answering this letter as long as you did the last. I remain
Your very affectionate cousin
Will."

Between 1860 - 1880: Catherine Wirt married W. S. Vandervoort and is a resident of Padua Township, McLean County, Illinois in 1885. (Per McLean County, Illinois History, written in 1885).
Probably married in Illinois (there per 1860 Census & in 1866 when first child was born) probably married about 1865 because that is one year before her first child was born.

Old photo shows Katherine & four Vandervoort children. (Carol J. Rutan has original).
