William Henry Barber was born in 1820 in Washington County, New York (contrary to what is stated in his obituary), son of Varnum Barber and Rachel (maiden name unknown). Henry had six siblings: Mary Ann Barber born 1818, George B. Barber born 1825, Emma Barber born 1826, Rosanna Barber born 1829, Horace Barber born 1830, and Weltha Maria Barber born 1832.

Henry married Carolina Rowley who was born circa 1823 in New York. Henry and Carolina had four children: William G.. Barber, Mary A. Barber, Hiram Chester Barber, and Caroline Elizabeth Barber.

The 1855 New York State Census for Springwater, New York (Livingston County) shows Henry W. Barber, a farmer, age 35, born in Washington County, New York; and his wife, Caroline, age 33, born in Alleghany County, New York. Living with them were four children: William G. Barber, age 11; Mary A. Barber, age 9; Hiram Chester Barber, age 7; and Caroline E. Barber, age 1; all born in Livingston County, New York.

The 1860 Federal Census for Springwater, New York (Livingston County) shows Henry Barber, age 40, a farm laborer, born in New York. His wife, Caroline, age 37, was born in New York. Their children were William Barber, age 16; Mary Barber, age 14; Chester Barber, age 14; and Elizabeth Barber, age 6; all born in New York.

The 1870 Federal Census for Springwater, New York (Livingston County) shows Henry Barber, a farmer, age 50, born in New York; and his wife, Caroline, age 47, born in New York. Living with them was their son, Chester Barber, age 22, a farm worker, born in New York.

The 1880 Federal Census for Springwater, New York (Livingston County) shows Henry Barber, a farmer, age 50, born in New York; and his wife, Mary Ann, age 55, born in New York. Living with them was Henry's stepson, David Henry, a miller apprentice, age 18, born in New York. Henry and his wife and stepson were living next door to his brother, Horace, and his family.

Henry died June 16, 1902 in Springwater and he was buried there in the Mount Vernon Evergreen Cemetery.
