Henry spent his early life on his father's farm in Sparta, NY, moving with his family to a farm in Springwater at the age of seven.
He attended the district school and later the Genesee Normal School, teaching one winter, but after that he decided desk work was not for him so he purchased a farm at Springwater, NY. He farmed for several years while also conducting his father's farm. After his father died he assumed ownership of his father's properties included a mill.
The mill was busy with buckwheat flour being the main product and some flour being produced for the local market.
Henry married Emma Willis on 16 Feb 1888. Emma was the daughter of Springwater native Nelson Willis, who's own father had been an early settler of Springwater. Emma died in March 1894 at only 33 years of age.
Henry and Emma had four children.
1. William "Willie"
4. Charles "Charlie"
Henry married again after the death of Emma.
Henry held the rank of sargeant in the Springwater branch of the Maccabees.
