Elpidio James Moronese was born Elpidio Moronese in Curti, Italy. Curti is located in what is now the Providence of Caserta, in the region of Campania. He was the son of Giuseppe Moronese and Teresa Martucci. He was named after his maternal grandfather, Elpidio Octavio Martucci.Giuseppe Moronese came to the United States in 1913. He purchased land in Bernardsville, NJ. In 1915 he sent for his family. Elpidio had an infection and was not allowed on the ship, so his mother, and his brother Michele, and sister Maria went on to the United States, leaving Elpidio in the care of his maternal grandmother Carmela Merola.In March of 1929, he joined his family in the United States. He traveled on the steam ship Vulcania. When reunited with his family he also met brothers and sisters he did not know. They were Frank, John, Carmine, Philomena, Lucy, and Carmela. Elpidio became known as, " Happy, " When receiving the sacrament of confirmation, he took the name, "James," which became his middle name, as was the custom in Europe.In early 1938,Happy met and fell in love with Mary, (Maria,) Josephine Croat of Plainfield, NJ.Mary was the daughter of Ralph Croat, (Raffaele Croce,) and Maria Buonpane.
Happy and Mary were married on November 19, 1938, at Saint Bernard,s Church in Plainfield. The couple lived in Plainfield, where Elpidio worked as a mason. For many years he co-owned Mirra and Moronese Contracting. The couple had three children; Theresa, Elaine, and Joseph. Happy died at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, after undergoing heart surgery.
