Herbert Gregory Biddle was the son of Victor and Sarah May (Reed) Biddle. He was born in Silver City, Colorado in 1906. At a young age he and his mother lived with his grandparents, Henry and Rebecca (Buck) Reed in Lancaster Township, Atchison County, Kansas. He married Eunice Irene Gilbert and in 1930 Herbert, his wife and daughter Ruth lived in Thurston, Nebraska, where he worked on a farm. In 1940 the family had moved to Grasshopper Township in Atchison County, Kansas, where Herbert again worked farming. His mother, Sarah Biddle, then 59, lived close by. The family had grown to include four more daughters, Rosemary, Jacqueline, Sandra and Sybilla.
