Clayte M. Paul Died Sunday
Following Hunting Trip
Funeral services for Clayte M. Paul, 64, owner and operator of Paul Hardware of this
city, were Wednesday morning at 10'o'clock at the Petterson Funeral Home here.
Paul, who had been in the hardware business here for most of his life, died suddenly late
Sunday afternoon while returning from a duck hunting trip near Middle River. He was with
his hunting companion. Ralph Petterson and his son, Marc, at the time. The men had been
hunting in the Thief Lake area and were on their way home. After getting into the rear
seat of the Petterson car, he apparently dozed off and it wasn't until several minutes
later that Petterson discovered Paul slumped over in the seat. Artificial respiration was
attempted to no avail. According to Petterson, Paul had not been exerting himself during
Paul was born in this city July 19, 1899, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Paul. He married
the former Mildred Helm here August 7, 1922.
He was one of the youngest veterans of World War. l from this area and was a past
commander of the American Legion Post here. He was a member of the Red Lake County Fair
Board and a former member of the Red Lake Falls park board. He was also a member of the
Red Lake Falls Commercial club which he served as president several years ago. Paul was
also an active golfer and hunter and had been on several previous hunting trips this
The deceased was a former employee of the Hunt Brothers Hardware firm here for many
years and purchased the hardware business owned by Clifford Wilcox in July 1954.
He is survived by his wife; his mother, Mrs. Agnes Paul of this city; three daughters,
Mrs. Leo Musil of Red Lake Falls, Mrs. Robert Quiggle (Lorna) of China Lake, Calif.; and
Mrs. William Veano (Mavis) of Hawthorne, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Fred (Gloy) Hallsten of
this city; two brothers, Fount of Pomona, Calif., and Lloyd of Minneapolis; and six
Final rites were held at the Petterson Funeral Home Wednesday morning with the Rev. Wm.
Keefe officiating. Military services were directed by American Legion and VFW Posts of
Serving as pall bearers were E. G. Robertson, A. W. Opheim, Nick Scheuiring, Arnold
Bache, A. C. Karasiewicz, Ben Johanson, Charles Boughton and Paul Schirrick. Interment
was in Oak Grove cemetery.
Out-of town relatives and close friends attending the services included Mrs. Wm. Veano of
Hawthorne, Calif.; Fount Paul of Pomona, Calif.; Lloyd Paul of Minneapolis, Mrs. Dante
Allegressa of Albert Lea, Mrs. Gisela Burns, Roman Helm and Mrs. Lillian Helm, all of
Minneapolis, Mr. and Mrs. Don Helm of St. Paul, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Macklitt and Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Haverstock of Minneapolis, Mrs. Carl Christenson of Hutchinson, Mr. and Mrs.
Neil McElwee of Felton, Mr. and Mrs. Don Snyder of Crookston, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hanson of
Bagley and Mrs. Ed Lieske of Plummer.
