Vinton served as a Seaman First Class, USS Golet (SS-361), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Lisbon Falls, Androscoggin County, Maine prior to the war.

Vinton was declared "Missing In Action" when the Golet was sunk by Japanese vessels northwest of Honshu during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He, along with the entire crew of 82, were officially declared as being dead by the military on January 18, 1946.
