James Harden Houchin served in the Navy (Seaman 2nd Class) aboard the USS Meredith DD434 during WW II. On Oct. 15, 1942 the USS Meredith was escorting the Vireo, which was towing a barge carrying gas and bombs to the Guadalcanal. The USS Meredith was sunk due to enemy action. While there were some survivors, unfortunately James was not among them. He died on Oct. 15, 1942 but was not declared legally dead until Oct 16, 1943. He is truly missed.
