COLE, LUCY ELLEN ROWNTREEŚ passed away on her ninetieth birthday, Monday, August 22, 2011 at Little Creek nursing home in Knoxville. Born to Carl Bearden Rowntree and Harriet Fowler Rowntree in Atlanta, Georgia on August 22, 1921, Lucy grew up in Atlanta, Coral Gables, Florida and Knoxville. She was the granddaughter of James A. Fowler Sr., a lawyer, civil servant, Assistant United States Attorney General (1911-1913) and mayor of Knoxville (1927-1929). Lucy graduated from Knoxville High School and from the University of Tennessee, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She was an employee of the Tennessee Valley Authority during the 1940's. She married James Taylor Cole in 1948, and together they raised a family of five children. Lucy was a member of Second Presbyterian Church since 1956. Preceded in death by her husband, James Taylor Cole, by her father and mother, Carl Bearden and Harriet Fowler Rowntree, and by brothers Carl, James and John Rowntree. Lucy is survived by son James Barry Cole and wife Jackie of Knoxville; son Steven Fowler Cole of Atlanta; daughter Patricia Ellen Cole Hinton and husband Robert of Dallas; daughter Mary Louise Cole Bryan and husband Robert of Ooltewah; and daughter Laura Marie Cole Turner and husband Michael of Knoxville; grandchildren Angela Schmidt and husband Scott of Knoxville; Eric Cole and wife Kim of Knoxville; Caitlin Hinton of Washington, DC; Maura Hinton of Dallas; Rebecca Bryan of Knoxville; Elizabeth Bryan of Ooltewah; Cole, Thomas and Gil Turner of Knoxville; great-grandson Aiden Cole of Knoxville; sister Harriet Campbell and husband William of Knoxville; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family extends their deepest thanks to Ann Goodge and the staff at Little Creek and to Shannondale Assisted Living's staff for the devoted care they gave Lucy over the last years of her life. Family and friends will meet at 9:45 am on Saturday, August 27 at Greenwood Cemetery for a 10:00 am graveside service with the Reverend Bryan Wilson officiating.
