Nelson Dunning was the son of Benjamin Alva Dunning of Connecticut and Olivia Hubbard of Canada. Nelson was born in Putnam County, Ohio.
He first married Lydia Blodgett 18 Sept 1855. He and Lydia came to California and resided in Cache Creek, Yolo County, CA. per 1860 census.
Nelson registered for the Civil War in 1863 in Wholfrom, CA. Voter records show he lived in Colusa, CA in 1871.
In 1875 Nelson married Rebecca Andrews. Nelson and Rebecca had a daughter Minnie Bell Dunning, a son Alva William Dunning, a son Elmer and a son Ralph. Nelson also was a step-father to Rebecca's son Frank Coulter.
Per the 1880 census, Nelson's occupation was General Merchandise Dealer. Nelson and Rebecca ran Dunning Millinery in Modesto, CA.
