NORFOLK - Joseph Stanley (Joe) Chitwood, 71, of 1801 Lafayette Blvd., a retired grocery buyer and merchandiser of Gian Open Air Markets, died Friday at 6:30 p.m. in a hospital.

A native of Columbus, Ga., he was a son of Eugene and Mrs. Etta Terry Chitwood and the husband of Mrs. Lora Mae Sasser Chitwood.

He came to Norfolk in 1920.

He began his grocery career here as a clerk for D. Pender Grocery Co., later known as Colonial Stores, Inc.

He moved up rapidly and was a supervisor before he reached the age of 30.

When he left Colonial Stores in 1940, he had opened 18 of the chains 21 supermarkets in the Southeast.

Also while connected with the Colonial Stores chain, he held positions as general sales manager and a general manager of Charlotte (N.C.) Division.

With that background, plus five years with Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. during World War II, he transferred to Giant Open Air Markets in 1947.

At the time of his retirement in 1964 as grocery buyer and merchandiser for Giant Open Air Market he handled annual purchases totaling $20 million.

He was a member of Park Place Methodist Church, Corinthian Masonic Lodge 266, and Elks Lodge 38.

He was secretary of the Tidewater Food Dealers Association at the time of his death.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Carl A. Dull Jr. on Winston-Salem, N.C., and Mrs. Willard h. Marable of Norfolk; three sisters, Mrs. Ronald Dela of Emporia, Mrs. Fae Cone of Omaha, Neb., and Mrs. Osborne Brooks of Mobile, Ala.; a brother, Harry Chitwood of Riverview, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Monday, at noon by the Re.v George W. Harrison of Park Place Methodist Church. Burial will be in Woodland Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be sent to the American Cancer Society.
