Charles O. Beck, 76, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

He was born April 27, 1925, in Chanute, Kansas, the son of Charles Curtis and Sadie (Sweeney) Beck.

He was a lifetime resident of Chanute.

He served in the United States Army during World War II and served four months with the First Marine Division in the South Pacific Islands in the battle of Pelelui Islands. He earned the bronze star for his part in securing the island. After his discharge from the military, he returned to Chanute.

He was a member of the Church of God, and a lifetime member of the Chanute V.F.W. and American Legion.

On June 16, 1946, he married Margaret Iyvonne Tripp Beck at Chanute. She died Oct. 24, 1999.

He had worked for Vierson & Cockran Drilling Company in Oklahoma and later for Helmerich & Payne Drilling of Tulsa, OK. He retired in 1974 after many years of service.

He took great pride in his Arabian horses, enjoyed restoring old antique equipment, fishing, and his cats.

He was very proud that his grandfather was the first pioneer doctor in Neosho County.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Joe Beck, of Scottsdale, AZ, and Terry "Pete" Beck, of Cheyenne, OK; a sister, Alberta Nafzinger of San Diego, CA; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Easter Aikins.

Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at Gibson-Koch-Friskel Chapel, Chanute, Kansas, led by the Rev. Gary Bates. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery on East 14th Street in Chanute, with military graveside rites provided by American Legion Post #170 of Chanute.
