Son of Council Briant Holmes and Mary Elizabeth (Lewis) Holmes. Shortly after his birth, the family left Alabama and settled in Trinity County, TX. By 1920, he is living in Lovelady, Houston Co., TX working as a barber. He married Thelma Faye Riggs 15 June 1925 in Montgomery County. They had two children: Faye & Bryant.
