SALEM - Richard "Dick" Allm passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 26th in his West Salem home at the age of 73.

Richard was born in Salem, Oregon to Jack and Lucille (Olson) Allm on August 28, 1937. He grew up as a peach farmer's son, and was a member of South Salem High School's first graduating class of 1956.

Richard joined the Army National Guard on February 21, 1956 and became a motor sargeant. He was honorably discharged February 20, 1962. Following discharge he worked five years as a civilian mechanic in the military motor pool in Salem. In 1966, Richard went to work at Thede's Marine in West Salem as a marine mechanic. It was during this time in his life that he developed a passion for boats and commercial fishing in the Pacific Ocean.

On June 3, 1967, he married Jane Bailey of Yamhill, Oregon. Richard built a home for them in West Salem, in his father's peach orchard where they raised three boys, Rich, Dave and Jim. In 1969, Richard went to work for what is now Winco as a diesel/forklift mechanic where he retired in 1995.

Over the years Richard mastered the art of boat building. Prior to meeting Jane, he built and raced hydroplanes. After marrying, Richard built and fished three dory boats out of Pacific City, a 29 foot bartender, and his prize boat the 40 foot 'Lady Jane' launched in 1997 out of Garibaldi. Richard was a soft spoken and unassuming man who loved his family and being active. He liked to work in his shop, have coffee with his friends, go to the casino, and spend time with his wife at the beach house he built in Rockaway Beach. He was a commercial salmon fisherman before and after his retirement. He coached and umpired baseball with his three boys, and most recently helped with his grandchildren's ball games. He loved being around young people and was thrilled to have grandchildren, finally, at age 64.

Richard is survived by his wife, Jane of Salem; three sons Rich (Kristi) and Dave (Monica) of Salem, Jim (Jeni) of McMinnville; sister, Delores (Wally) Park of Salem; three grandchildren, Paige, Ryan and Samantha (Rich and Kristi's children).

Crypt-side services were held at Restlawn Mausoleum June 1, 2011. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Morningside Methodist Church (of which Richard was a member) or to the Willson House at the United Methodist Retirement Center in Salem.
