George M. Bapis 1943-2003
George M. Bapis was born October 20, 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died of melanoma October 16, 2003 in New York City.
He was the son of Mike N. and Maxine Bapis.
He married Helene Tsigrikes in New York City June 27, 1998. George is the father of twin daughters, Michaela Maxine and Maria Constance. He is survived by his wife (Helene); daughters; brother, Nick (wife, Elaine) M. Bapis, Salt Lake City; sister, Eugenia (Jeannie) duPont (husband, Peter), New York City, nieces and nephews, Laura duPont, Andrew duPont, both New York City, Michael N. Bapis (wife, Eleni), Salt Lake City, Alethia Bapis, San Francisco.
A leader throughout his life, George graduated from Jordan High School, Sandy, Utah where he was student body president, 1961. He graduated from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, 1965 with a degree in finance.
He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served two years as an infantry officer, including a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam, where he was awarded two Bronze Stars and the Army Commendation Ribbon.
He moved to New York City in 1969 and was employed as a stockbroker at F.I. duPont and at E.F. Hutton. From 1988 to present he was Senior Vice President of Investments at Morgan Stanley, New York City. He served as treasurer and chaired the investment committee for six years of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in New York City. At the time of his death he was president of the board of trustees of the American College of Greece, Athens, a position he held for 15 years. He was a member of the Hartwood Club, Forestburgh, NY; the Knickerbocker Golf and Country Club, Tenafly, NJ; and the New York Athletic Club, New York City.
His parents preceded him in death. Funeral will be Tues. Oct 21, 11 a.m. Holy Trinity Creek Orthodox Cathedral, 319 E. 74th St. New York. Friends may all Mon. Oct 20, 6-8 p.m. at the Cathedral. Interment, Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral Restoration Fund. 279 So. 300 W.
