Hannah was eight years old when her father died in 1786 in Charleston County, South Carolina. Her mother moved them to Abbeville sometime after that. She met John Quay who years before had built and ran the Quay tavern, which was also the stagecoach stopover and popular social center. Her mother married John Quay and they moved into the former tavern.

Marriage record (Wardlaw Book) revealed James Wardlaw and Hannah Clarke married on June 9, 1796 in Abbeville County, South Carolina.

James was twenty-eight and Hannah was seventeen when they married there in the Quay house.

Sometime after her mother's death in November 1796, they bought the house and their son, David was born there in March 1799. They added several rooms and modernized the house, raised their family there and died there.

The 1800 census revealed James owned eight slaves and they were living in Abbeville County, South Carolina. Household members: James and one male (26-44), Hannah (16-25), David & Francis (under 10), one male (16-25) and Elizabeth (under 10).

The 1820 census revealed James owned thirty-eight slaves, fifteen household members were engaged in agriculture and one household member was engaged in manufacture. Household members: James (45 & up), Hannah (26-44), two males (45 & up), Jose & William (under 10), Robert (10-15), Francis & David (16-25), Ann & Jane (under 10) and Mary & Elizabeth (10-15).

They had been married twenty-nine years and their daughter, Hannah was about four years old when Hannah died on Nov 11, 1825.

Over her grave the epitaph reads: "She lived a pattern of domestic excellence and was suddenly cut off in the midst of quiet usefulness and deserved enjoyment."

Hannah lived to age 47.
