John P. married Nannie Bell Griffin Nabors July 19, 1900. She was born April 29 either 1868 or 1869 in Tupelo, Mississippi. She married Tom Nabors and they had one child, Tommy Nabors. The entire Griffin family moved west, settling first in Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, Oklahoma. Her husband left her during this time. The family moved to Kaufman County settling near Kemp. She had 4 brothers, Henry, Ed, Will, Oscar and 2 sisters, Mary Griffin who married Tom Mooneyham and Kate Griffin who married Walter Shelton. They all lived and died in and around Kemp. Mr. Griffin (thought to have been Thomas fought in the Civil War and often told them of living on parched corn for days and days. She often told us of her father, fighting for the South and John P's father fighting for the North. Nannie (called Nan) was a good, hard working woman and must have been very brave to have married a man with nine children. As she grew older, they were all very kind and good to her, which means she must have been a "Good Step-mother".
John P. and Nan Easterly had one son Harvey born May 2,1903, died December 26, 1965 married May 26. 1926 to Amanda Jane Naylor, one daughter Wanda Jean married Ellis Patterson Jr., two sons.
They continued to live in the family home on Water Hill until November of 1917 when John's failing health helped him decide to sell the home and land and move to the outskirts of Kemp, much closer to the town of Kemp. On March 17, 1918 he ate a large supper and died before the Doctor could get there. Nan became totally blind and bedfast before her death, on August 6, 1953. She was buried beside John P. and her son Tommy Nabors, in the Lone Oak Cemetery.
From the Easterly Family article by Junita Tidwell in "A History of Kaufman County"
