Services will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Chapel, 3700 River Blvd., Friday, June 9, at 10:00 a.m. for Richard Acosta, 80, who passed away June 4, 2006. Pastor Stan Bernstein will officiate. Full military honors by the Kern County Veterans Association at graveside. Richard was born on April 22, 1926, in Kernville, CA. He attended the Sherman Indian School in Riverside, CA. Richard served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War serving for 8 years as a Gunnersmate 3rd Class. After an honorable discharge he went to work for the Local #220 as a Hod Carrier for 30 years. Richard Acosta a Paiute/Yokut native was a spiritual leader for several Indian councils. He was a long time member of the V F W and D A V, National Rifle Association and Laborer International Union Local #220. Richard met his wife when they were in their teens and after a longtime friendship they were married. Out of this union 7 children were born; Barbara Acosta Martinez, Richard (Ricky) Acosta, Jr., Anthony Alan Acosta and wife, Leora, Roland S. Acosta and wife, Aida all of Bakersfield, Rose Marie Acosta of Highland, CA, Christine Acosta Shine and husband Sammy, William Acosta (Roger) and wife, Brenda all of Bakersfield; 20 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Doreen M. Peterson and husband, Ken of Apple Valley, CA and Jim W. Davis of San Jose and their children; brother, Feliciano Alvarez and sister, Adriana Alvarez. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Salvador Acosta and Julia Joaquin, wife, Ella Marie Acosta in 1993, grandson, Anthony A. Acosta Jr., in 1994, great- granddaughter, Mikella McAuley in 2001 and daughter-in-law, Evelyn Davis in 2004. Richard was a caring and giving man. He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. Our special thanks to Odyessy Hospice. Visitation begins today, Wednesday, 3:00 - 9:00 p. m.
