Uria was born in Virgina, but moved with her family to Clinton County OH by 1836, and later, to Preble County, OH, where she met and married Thomas Elwood Powell of Wayne County, IN, on April 6 1854. They lived in Wayne County for several years, before removing to Highland County, OH. Because Thomas was a much sought after carpenter, the family moved frequently throughout Highland and Clinton Counties. Uria kept house and raised their children as they moved from place to place. They were living in Clinton County when their middle child, Mary Emma, died at age 7. Despite her deep sorrow from this loss, Uria carried on with her duties, just as she had when Thomas joined the Union Army when their youngest child was only a month old.
While he returned from the war apparently unscathed, he shortly began to suffer from occasional debilitating pain that increased as the years went by, until he was eventually unable to work at all. Uria raised their remaining children and saw them off to marriage and their own homes as she cared for her ailing husband. She supported him in his successful effort to obtain a pension for his war service. After his death, Uria had to fight for her widow's pension, and was able to produce many witnesses who could testify to Thomas' condition and her moral worthiness to receive a pension, a requirement of the time. Her small pension allowed her to remain in her own home until her death on December 13, 1899.
