Birth: Oct. 5, 1908
Marshall County
West Virginia, USA
Death: Apr. 7, 2003
St. Bernard Parish
Louisiana, USA

Gordon grew up in Cameron, WV, and, following his graduation from high school, taught in the one-room schools of Liberty District in Marshall County, WV for 10 years as he attended college in Fairmont during the summers. Although he continued to teach in Liberty District after graduating from college, he decided to join the Navy and became an Ensign in August, 1941, just a few months before Pearl Harbor. After marrying Grace Boggess June 4 1942, he was called to serve in the European Theater. From shortly after their first meeting in college until after the war, Gordon maintained a lively correspondence with Grace and those letters are still cherished by the family.

Following the end of WW II, Gordon made a career of the Navy, and in 1962, retired in New Orleans, LA, with the rank of Commander. He then returned to teaching, this time turning his talents to the high school level, teaching geometry and algebra in the nearby St. Bernard Parish public high schools. In 1968, the couple moved to that parish. Upon retiring from the St. Bernard Parish school system, he taught in a parochial high school for several years, then retired from teaching to apply himself to his life-long hobbies of photography and shortwave radio, and added gardening to his hobbies until his death.

Long before their deaths, both Gordon and Grace had decided to be cremated and buried beside her parents. After Grace died, Gordon planned to take her cremains to Pennsylvania in the spring, but died suddenly and unexpectedly on April 7, 2003 at age 94, less than three months after his beloved Grace. In accord with their wishes, their cremains were transported to Pleasant Hill and, on May 14, 2003, were buried beside her parents.

He was one of the Greatest Generation and served his country faithfully in war and peace.
