Son of William Ellery and May (Buckland) Merriss. Attended Cornell University; graduated from Columbia University. He was the assignor on two US Patents, i.e. he invented something while in the employ of a company and obtained patents for the inventions. Cause of death was stomach cancer and his body was cremated. It is believed his ashes were scattered on a mountain in New Hampshire. See photos.
He married 1st: Laura Lawson Ramsay in 1913, and their children were William E., Geoffrey, Phillip R., and Joan E. He married 2nd: Hazel M. Merriss who was responsible for the memorial on the New Hampshire mountain.
