Louis Berthiaume was born in Jul 1842 at Canada (French), son of Francois and Elizabeth (Paquet) Berthiaume.
At the time of his enlistment in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, in 1862, he was living at Worcester, Massachusetts and gave his occupation as blacksmith.
On 18 Feb 1862 Louis mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Worcester, Massachusetts, using the name "Lewis Brigham," according to his pension file. He was 19 years and 7 months old. On 3 Feb 1863 he mustered out of the 15th Massachusetts due to disability.
After the war, Louis returned to Canada, and on 19 Jul 1864 Tancrede Berthiaume married Celina Gaudette, 24, daughter of Michel and Josephte (Dupont) Gaudet, at Contrecoeur Ste-Trinité, Quebec, Canada. They had 11 children, and eight were still living in 1900.
Louis Berthiaume was a "forgeron" (blacksmith) at the time of his marriage. The couple had eight children.
In 1871 he was included in the city directory at Contrecoeur, Vercheres County, Quebec, Canada, as a blacksmith in "Lovell's Province of Quebec Directory."
About 1886 the family returned to the United States and settled in Ware, Massachusetts. Louis Berthiaume died on 17 Feb 1905 at Ware, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, of heart failure. He was 62 years and 7 months old.
