Jim joined the U.S. Army in July 1943 and served in the South Pacific, landing with countless others on the beachhead of Leyte Island, Philippines. He earned the level of sergeant first class and was honorably discharged in December 1945.
He met his future wife, Mary Spangle in the summer of 1948. They married Dec. 25, 1949. He worked for Ocean Beauty Seafoods, previously known as Portland Fish Co. He was employed there for 58 years, retiring at the age of 89. He proved to be a unique individual, working in many departments and managing several. He was proud of his record of never missing a day's work due to sickness.
Jim always had a great sense of humor and was a loving, compassionate and unselfish person. He was always the first to lend a helping hand to both strangers and friends. So many people were touched by his kindness and he will be deeply missed.
James died of cancer April 18, 2010, with his family by his side. He is survived by Mary, his wife of over 60 years; their daughter, Mary Pastorino (Don); grandchildren Aleah, Anthony and Adam Pastorino; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald, Frank and Ralph.
It was Jim's wish that there would be no service. Private interment will be in Skyline Memorial Gardens, Portland.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the American Cancer Society.
