Death: Sep. 9, 2005

Obituary, Times-Herald (Vallejo, CA) - Thursday, September 22, 2005:

Jessica "Deonn" Baker passed away peacefully Friday morning, Sept. 9, 2005, at the age of 53 after a long battle with cancer. A longtime resident of Vallejo, Deonn is survived by her beloved sons, Jason (Mileka) Baker of Mendocino and Micah Baker of Suisun; daughter, Jada Baker of Vallejo; and her two beautiful grandchildren, Naomi and Nikai Baker, both of Mendocino. She is also survived by her parents, Bruce and Vicki Tavey, both of Redding; sisters, Debi Tavey of Vacaville and Candy McMahon of Williamsburg, Va.; and three nephews and a niece. Deonn also had many friends that she considered family members.

Born March 17, 1952, in Redding, Deonn grew to love teaching, reading, traveling, cooking, eating, music, sailing, her close friends, and most of all, her grandchildren.

She spent the majority of her short life helping the youth of Vallejo. Deonn, a preschool teacher by trade, was a parent facilitator for the Vallejo City Unified School District for many years and was involved in the Just For Kids and Kids at Work programs. Her dedication to young children is best summarized by one of her 5-year-old student's words, "I love teacher Deonn because she always listens to me." She was also affiliated with Benicia Vallejo Humane Society, the California School Employees Association and the Community Advisory Committee for Special Education.

There will be a celebration of life to honor Deonn on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, at 1 p.m. at the Vallejo Yacht Club, 485 Mare Island Way, Vallejo. Deonn's ashes will be scattered over her favorite destinations, Hawaii, the Russian River and Mount Tamalpais, following the ceremony.

Deonn's immediate family would like to thank her friends for the support, prayers and donations during Deonn's battle with ovarian cancer over the last four years. Any future donations should be made in Deonn's honor to the American Cancer Society.
