James Joseph Dodson was named at birth, Jessie James Dodson by parents William and Ida M. (Flack) Dodson. Jessie was sent to St. Joseph's Home for Orphans in Erie, Pennsylvania at the age of 3. The Catholic Priest that baptised Jessie, renamed him James Joseph Dodson.
Served in United States Army, serial number 4440553, (first enlistment) February 15, 1915 to August 15, 1916 from Company D 16th Infantry, discharged as private of good character. It was relayed by his daughter, Elizebeth Ann (Dodson) Laughlin, that James Dodson was discharged from his first enlistment after the Army found out that he was under age. Enlisted (second enlistment), or inducted September 6, 1918 at Erie, Pa, at the age of 21, brown eyes, brown hair, dark complexion, height 5 ft 3 inches, completed shots for Typhoid Prophylaxis September 25, 1918, completed shots for Paralyphoid Prophylaxis September 25, 1918, Honorable Discharge January 7, 1919 as a private 8th Company 2nd Infantry Battalion 158 DB (Captain Francis Garcia Commanding, 8th Company 2nd Infantry Battalion 158 DB, Camp Sherman, Ohio). Received $61.51 at discharge.
