A Lake County, Tennessee, planter known as Anderson Cates he was said to have left home (possibly North Carolinaa) around age 10, going to Louisiana, and then some years later he making his way to Mississippi and, finally, Lake County, Tennessee, in 1836. Per Goodspeed's History of Tennessee, 1887, BIOGRAPHIES, History of Lake County, Anderson served on first Lake Co. grand jury along with H.M. Darnall (his son's grandfather-in-law) & others. Anderson patened and bought a good bit of land over the years. He famously established Cates' Landing, a riverboart dock and supply port. In those days riverboats stopped for freight & passengers but also for fuel, e.g. wood, which was heavy & quickly burned up to create the steam that turned the paddle wheels. The landing was located at one of the few local locations of the eastern river shore that did not flood over in spring or fall. Also important was that Cates was able to provide a steady supply of fuel from land he owned, which as cleared became productive crop land.

He married to Alice Jane Emily Peacock in 1848. She died in 1849. No issue.
He then married Susan Box 15 Dec 1850. He & Susan had 9 CHILDREN:
