Vivian graduated from Port Townsend High School at age 16 with highest honors.Also Bellingham Normal School (now Western Washington University) and began teaching at the age of 18 in Hopewell School for three years. She began teaching first grade in Ferndale in 1925 and taught there for 46 years. She also had a BA in English, Univ. Wash., Masters in Education from WWU., and did Graduate study at Wheaton, ILL.
In 1923, Vivian Gunderson started Hopewell Community Church.
She started a Sunday School in an un-churched community north of Ferndale in the 1930s, which became Evergreen Community Church. For 13 years she wrote a weekly column for teens for "The Sunday School Times".
In 1960, Vivian Gunderson started Gunderson Publications in order to provide low-cost Christian materials for children. The materials were designed to be used in the home and in Sunday School. More information can be obtained from http://christianchildrensbooks.net/about.html.
She enjoyed people of all ages, reading, walking, travel, and flower gardening. She traveled to Britain, New Zealand, Australia, Western Europe, and Israel.
