Patricia Pittard Cardin passed away July 21, 2012, at age 73. She was born in Athens on November 25, 1938, the daughter of Milton H. Pittard and Lillian Knowles Pittard.
Pat lived in the Atlanta area for many years, both before and after a brief time in New Orleans. After retiring from Cohn & Wolfe public relations in 2001, she returned to her home town and rejoined the Athens First United Methodist Church. She sang in the FUMC Sanctuary Choir and was a member of the FUMC Altar Guild and UMW Circle 3. Pat also sang with the Athens Choral Society for a number of years. She was an avid supporter of the UGA Men's Tennis program and a long-time member of its Champions Club. She was also a charter member of the Friends of WUGA Radio and served as a station volunteer for various fundraising events.
In 1978, Pat fulfilled a teenage dream and earned her pilot's license. She was an active pilot for many years and maintained close friendships in the aviation community. She was a charter member of the Greenland Expedition Society, formed in 1981 to locate and recover eight World War II aircraft that were forced to land on the Icecap in 1942. Pat was at the dig site in Greenland in 1992 to celebrate the recovery of one P-38 Lightning--she always said it was the best vacation she ever had. In 2009, Pat was appointed to the Athens-Clarke County Airport Authority.
She is survived by her children, Richard (Donna) Cardin, of Snellville, Jody (Tim) Kelly, of Dunwoody, and Michael (Susan) Cardin, of Colbert; and grandchildren, Ben and Nick Cardin, Sean, Ryan, and Ashlyn Kelly, and Zachary and Harris Cardin.
The family would like to thank the members of the Altar Guild and Circle 3 of Athens FUMC, Odyssey Hospice, and St. Mary's Hospice House, as well as the caregivers and many friends who provided support and prayers during this difficult time.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 31st, at Athens First United Methodist Church, with the Reverends Chuck Hodges and Martha Aenchbacher officiating. Following the interment in the Winterville Cemetery, the family will be receiving guests at Pat's home.
