Though Virginia was born in Paris, Texas, she spent her early childhood in Portland, Oregon.
Virginia attended Ben Franklin High School in Highland Park, California. This is where she met her first husband Nathan Cabot Hale on a stairway. They had two children; Marjorie and Nathan. He worked in radio sales. They divorced at about the time of the depression. At that time she began nursing school, however, she met Redmond Stevens, a journalist, whom she married and had three children with: Theresa, John, and Helene. By 1940 she was once again a single mom, attending nursing school at San Bernardino County Hospital.
She started her nursing career in Ojai, California.
By 1947 she remarried the WWII Vet, Arthur Scammon who worked in the chemical industry at Shell Oil. They had one son, Dennis. In 1951 Virginia worked as a nurse at Community Hospital in Long Beach. She eventually attended Long Beach State College to get an advanced degree in nursing, however she changed to English Lit. She began work towards a Masters Degree, but did not complete this. She taught English at a high school in Downey, CA. She also taught at two high schools in Huntington Beach, CA.
Her joy was the English language.
