Sylvia Elizabeth Clingman was the daughter of Ira and Genevieve Bennett Clingman. She was born in Martinsburg, Iowa and grew up near Linby, Iowa. She married Richard Nicola June 21, 1941 in Kirksville, Missouri. She was a long time resident of Iowa though she lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Manassas, Virginia for eight years, and 4 years in Arkansas before returning to Iowa.
Sylvia and Richard were the parents of three children: Richard, Curtis, and Jess. Sylvia had 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She had one brother, Deane Clingman and four sisters, Eunice White, Edith Clingman, Vera Hill, and Lila Lewis.
