SKOWHEGAN -- Ruth L. Hodgdon, 92, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at Cedar Ridge Center for Health Care and Rehabilitation in Skowhegan, Maine.
Ruth was born Oct. 9, 1916, in Skowhegan, the daughter of Arthur and Rena (Oak) Stoodley. She graduated from Skowhegan High School.
Ruth and her husband, Charles E. Hodgdon, built and operated the Sew and Sew Shop on Lakewood Road until they retired. She was avid at sewing, knitting, crocheting, crafts, crossword puzzles and bingo. She was a ham radio operator with contacts worldwide and belonged to several related organizations. Ruth was also and outdoor person. She enjoyed fishing and once caught a nine-pound, 28-inch landlocked salmon which qualified her for "The One That Did Not Get Away Club."
In 2008 at the age of 91, she was chosen to represent Cedar Ridge Center at the Statehouse Hall of Flags for the "Remember ME" ceremony. She got to shake hands with the governor and received a plaque honoring her lifetime achievements.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Charles E. Hodgdon; her brothers, James, Kenneth and Robert Stoodley; and her sisters, Lillian McKenney and Faye McGlaughlin.
She is survived by her daughters, Vivian Salimone, of Williston, Vt., Shirley Lapointe and her husband, Francis, of Skowhegan, and Charlene Hyde and her husband, Robert, of Madison; her grandchildren, Mark Lapointe and his wife, Laurie, of Augusta, Susan Hanson and her husband, Roger, of Winthrop, Kenneth Lapointe and his wife, Linda, of Arizona, Daniel Salimone, of California, and Lisa Northop, of Vermont; her great-grandchildren, Derek and Nathan Lapointe, Jared Hanson, Will Northop and Sarah Wells; her sister, Grace Lyons and her husband, Arnold, of Bangor; several nieces and nephews; and a longtime friend, Kitty Laury, of Skowhegan.
A special thanks to everyone at Cedar Ridge Center.
At the request of her family, there will be no visiting hours.
A memorial service will take place at a later date at the Southside Cemetery in Skowhegan. Cremation and service arrangements are by Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple St. Madison.
