Hurbia Eli Eyster's middle name was actually Elias, but he used Eli, just as his grandfather used Eli, instead of Elias. There was a period of a few years in records that his name is Herbert in records. Whether he used it or someone else just thought it was easier, who knows. His name has more variations than anyone else in my family tree. In part, transcribers of census records, when the handwriting is not clear, as often happens, use a name that believe to be the correct one or try to decipher the writing. So we have seen Huston, Herbij, Herbig, Hervey, Corby and other variations based on poor writing and unfamiliarity with the name. My father said that some people called him "Irv". This was a German heritage family and perhaps an accent added to the names.
This is my grandfather; he died before I was born. My father said he fell off a scaffold while working as a painter, dying in a District of Columbia hospital. The obituary printed in a York, PA paper he fell eight feet when the scaffold collapsed whle painting a bridge. The obit stated he died at Emergency Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Never having met either of my father's parents, I am glad to have the Family Bible and this Grandfather's Painter's Bible--with "recipes" for hundreds of treatments and toppings for wood. It is well-worn and looks well-used and quite fascinating!
