Viggo Bovbjerg of Evanston, noted educator who was formerly of Oak Park, died on March 31 in Evanston, and memorial services will be conducted for him on Sunday at 4 o'clock in the auditorium of the National College of Education, 2840 Sheridan Road, where he taught for 16 years. Dr. David Russell of Downers Grove will speak at the service and a special program of Bach music will be given by the University of Chicago Singers.
Mr. Bovbjerg was born in Denmark in 1884 and came to this country as a young man. For years he was identified with recreational and youth groups at Hull House and Gadshill settlements, and for ten years he carried on recreational therapy in the state hospitals in Chicago, Kankakee and Elgin.
During the past 17 years Mr. Bovbjerg has been a member of the faculty of National College of Education in Evanston, teaching in the field of mental hygiene and psychology. He also taught manual training in the demonstration school of the college. His summer camp at Greenville, Mich. known as the "Bo Family Camp" has been unique in its simplicity and has been based on principles of cooperative living.
During the war, he contributed generously of his time working with the USO and in the hospital of Great Lakes, where he helped in manual activities.
Mr. Bovbjerg was a graduate of the University of Copenhagen and had studied extensively in this country. He was well known as a lecturer in the field of mental hygiene, child behavior and family relationships.
He leaves his widow, Sena, a son, Richard, who is a graduate student at the University of Chicago, Geraldine, who also is a student at the same college and Mrs. Charles Dodd (Edel) of Ann Arbor, Mich. The three children attended the Oak Park schools for most of their undergraduate work.
