Charles Columbus Day was born on April 1, 1917 in the Henderson Mounds community, near East Prairie, to the late John H. and Rhoda Lee Cooper Day. He lived in Hammond,Ind. for several years, where he was a Steelworker for Youngstown Sheet and Tube. Charlie was of the Protestant belief. He was also a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a sergeant from May 2, 1942, to Sept. 26, 1945. He joined and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from Nov. 20, 1945, until May 6, 1949, in Wiesbaden, Germany.
On Sept. 16, 1948, in Wiesbaden, he married Margarete Denfield, who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, James and Carolyn Day of Sikeston; two daughters and one son-in-law, Margie and Jerry Wood of Scottsboro, Ala., and Patricia Ann Day of the home in Sikeston; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Four brothers, Henry, Calvin, James "Jim" and John L. Day; and two sisters, Ethel Simpkins and Eugenia Pritchett, preceded him in death.
