Bob was born in Aurora, Illinois and had lived in West Des Moines for the last 36 years. He was a 1954 graduate of Northwestern University and their Athlete of the Year in 1954. He was the Drake Relays Director at Drake University until his retirement in 2000. Bob was a US Marine Corps veteran, member of Plymouth Congregational Church, Isaac Walton League, and board member of the Senior Olympics. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseshoes and billiards.
