Luther was the youngest of 14 children born to William Henry and Olive Catherine Dunnigan Hammond.
He married Fannie Lena Perkins and they never had any children.
Luther's relationship with his brother who lived in Nebraska was instrumental in Ezra's Perkins branch of the tree. i.e. Had Luther not had a brother in Nebraska, his wife Lena and her Parents and siblings (including Ezra) would have never moved there, where Ezra stayed and started his family. Luther, Lena, and the rest of the Perkins returned to Kentucky.
Luther was a Deputy Jailer in the Shelby County Detention center. He was injured during an assault by two inmates attempting to escape. Deputy Jailer Hammond died from his injuries six days later.
