City Mourns Lt. C.C. Bartsch
Killed in Action
A War Department telegram was delivered to Mrs. Mary West Bartsch early Monday morning, informing her that her husband, Second Lieutenant C. C. (Sonny) Bartsch, had been killed in action in France on July 15th.
The telegram read as follows: "Mrs. Mary W. Bartsch: the Secretary of War desires me to express his deep rgret [sic] that your husband, Second Lieutenant Clarence C. Bartsch, was killed in action on July 15 in France. Letter follows. Ulio, the Adjutant General."
Lt. Bartsch entered the service on June 10, 1942 and took his basic training at Ft. Meade, Md., in the 67th Infantry Division. From there he went to Ft. Jackson, S.C. attached to the 100th Division as a Sergeant.
He entered Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Ga. and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on Nov. 16, 1943. Since May of this year he has been overseas, and moved into France the first part of July.
A sorrowing city extends sincere sympathy to Mrs. Bartsch and Lt. Barsch's [sic] parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bartsch of West Washington St.

Lt. Clarence C. Bartsch, CCom killed, France; July 15, 1944
Clarence was honored as one of the Northwestern graduates lost in WWII. He is also listed on the DuPage County Veterans Memorial website. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his participation in the battle in Normandy that took his life.
He was born about 1910 in DuPage County, Illinois, the son of Charles and Lena Bartsch. He had two siblings, a brother, Ralph, and a sister, Pearl.
