Daughter of Reverend Elisha Pratt and Louisa Henrietta (Warren) Cook. She attended the Black River Literary and Religious Institute at Watertown, N.Y.
First married to Giles Cornwell at Mannisville, N.Y. Three sons and one daughter. Mr. Cornwell died in 1855.
Married to Colonel Sidney J. Mendell (2nd wife) June 9, 1887. She resided on the Mendell farm one mile east of Dows, IA On May 15, 1901, while driving near the Parkinson Bridge, her horse became frightened by a passing team and she was thrown from the buggy. She died at age 77.
She was strongly patriotic, believing strongly in God, the American Union, and the abolition of slavery. She possessed talents of high order both as an artist and a musician. She was a member of the Dows Presbyterian Church.
