June 28, 2023 - memories from her granddaughter (Jen Nelson)

Elizabeth Genevieve "Betty Gene" Caldwell was the only daughter of Carl Christopher Caldwell (b. 1898 - d. 1958) and Irene Louisa Crume (b. 1901 - d. 1976).

Grandma had one sibling, Clinton C Caldwell, and we have some really cute photos of the 2 of them as kids. Uncle Clinton also came to visit Grandma in Pekin, IL in the late 1980s, and they were very close, even though they lived so far apart.

Grandma married Walter L Forbes on Aug 18, 1943 in Bradford, IL and they divorced June 9, 1966.

Grandma had 5 living children during my lifetime - my Mom, my 2 Uncles and my 2 Aunts - but I believe she also had twins who were stillborn ~1944, and perhaps 1 or 2 other stillbirths.

Grandma had 15 grandchildren and 14 of us are living.

I have very loving memories of Grandma as I was growing up, whether we were at her house eating TV dinners, watching 1970s sitcoms and playing Yahtzee. She would also come up to our home in the Chicago area every summer and watch the Cubs with my dad and come to my and my brothers' baseball games.

In my memories, Grandma always worked, usually as a Bookkeeper.

Grandma was a fantastic cook. She made her own dumplings and noodles from scratch. She also made fudge and divinity.

Grandma loved to be "hip" and often showed off her fashionable jeans and sneakers. I also recall Grandma's 2 beloved dogs - a beagle named Lucky and a poodle named Shane.

I miss her dearly.
